Orchid Research in China
Dr Hong Liu, an Assistant Professor in FIU's Earth and Environment Department, is currently conducting field work in China.  Since 2008, Dr Liu has been conducting ongoing field work in the Yachang Orchid Nature Preserve.  The preserve is located in the remote Guangxi Province in southwestern China on the border with Vietnam.  Guangxi together with the adjacent Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces, forms one ot the world's nine orchid-diversity hotspots.  It was not until 2004 that several Chinese botanists discovered more than 130 species of orchids in this area.  Dr. Liu reports that the sheer numbers and variety of orchid species is simply amazing.  These include orchids of great horticultural importance that have been collected to near extinction elsewhere, such as species of Cymbidium and Paphiopedilum.  Among the exciting discoveries in Yachang are at least one species new to science, as well as the rediscovery of Geodorum uelophiodes, a flashy terrestrial species that was classifed as extinct 80 years ago.  Because of Dr. Liu's involvement with this preserve FIU is listed as a co-sponsor of the Guangxi International Orchid Conservation Workshop.
