Vice Provost for Academic Affairs

Elizabeth Bejar, Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Accountability has agreed to move into the position of Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. Dr. Bejar was the first Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Accountability and in that role was responsible for establishing the institutional assessment and evaluation plans and policies that led to FIU having no recommendations for improvement in these areas in the 2010 SACS reaffirmation of accreditation review. With the new requirements in this area and the track record of SACS almost always finding need for improvement in these areas at other universities, the fact that there were no recommendations in the areas of Elizabeth’s responsibilities was a spectacular achievement.

Elizabeth joined FIU in 2003 as Assistant Dean for the College of Health and Urban Affairs. In that role, she established an enrollment management model for the College, created and implemented an institutional research office to support the data needs of the academic units, and worked to streamline the policy agenda for the College.

Prior to joining FIU, she served the state of Massachusetts as an Academic Policy Analyst for the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education.

Dr. Bejar holds degrees in psychology and international development of education having received her doctoral degree from the Boston College Lynch School of Education.

The Office of Academic Planning and Accountability (APA) will now report to Susan Himburg. Dr. Himburg has been the Director of the Office of Accreditation in APA. She will continue these responsibilities as she becomes Director of the entire APA office. Dr. Himburg is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition and served as the lead in both the 2000 and 2010 successful reaffirmation of accreditation exercises.

Early diagnosis of autism can lead to better treatment

Early diagnosis of autism can lead to better treatment

Autism awareness month has come and gone for 2012, but the need for awareness has not. The struggles for families affected by the disorder remain, and the number of those affected continues to rise.

One in 88 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by the age of eight, according to a report recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s a 78 percent increase in the communities studied since 2002. Although the report does not identify a specific cause for the increase in prevalence, it alludes to the importance of early detection and early intervention.

“What we do know is that we are getting better at diagnosing it, and better diagnosis leads to better treatment,”said Anibal Gutierrez, assistant professor in FIU’s Department of Psychology.

A board-certified behavior analyst, Gutierrez’s research includes treatment effectiveness for individuals with autism. Although the CDC report shows an increase in prevalence, he said, other research shows the number of adults with low-functioning (severe) autism has decreased.
