Welcome to the A&S Graduate Studies website. I bring to the position five years of experience as the Graduate Program Director for Biological Sciences. My service as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies is also informed by my service on the Graduate Council. I served as the Vice-Chair of the Graduate Council for a semester (Fall 2005) and as Chair from Spring 2006-Summer 2008. I am committed to improving the academic experience for our students and their advisors. Maureen Donnelly, Ph.D. Associate Dean of Graduate Studies Professor, Biological Sciences Graduate Studies in the College of Arts & SciencesDepartments in the College offer 36 graduate degrees and 6 graduate certificates. Several programs have thesis options for Master’s degrees, and some only require graduate coursework. Doctoral programs are offered in Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Earth Sciences, Economics, History, International Relations, Modern Languages (Spanish), Physics, Political Science, Psychology, and Public Administration. Theses and Doctoral Dissertations are research-based educational opportunities that match students and advisory committees. The committee functions to help the student master the research process that includes production of the written document. Theses and Dissertations can be written as stand alone documents or as an assembly of research papers. We encourage students to work with their committees to determine the type of thesis/dissertation the student will write early in the process. Several graduate programs offer seminar series that bring outside speakers to campus to enhance the academic experience for students and their mentors. These series are supported jointly by the University Graduate School (RUGS or UGS), the College of Arts and Sciences, and by departments. The Graduate Student Association is a very active group on campus and offer a variety of workshops, fora, and social gatherings. The College has the responsibility for approving all graduate paperwork associated with theses and dissertations. Our deadlines are one week in advance of those of the UGS. We ensure that students complete the formal paperwork correctly and complete the necessary training required by the UGS prior to advancing to candidacy. The College is also responsible for generation of contracts and waivers to students supported with assistantships. Our goal is to provide reliable and rapid service to those involved with graduate education.
