Dr. Joseph N. Boyer Appointed as the New Director of SERC

Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Kenneth G. Furton, has announced the appointment of Dr. Joseph N. Boyer as the new Director of SERC.  Dr. Boyer has been Associate Director of SERC for seven years and held the position of Scholar/Scientist at FIU since 1995.  He received a BS in Microbiology from The American University (1978) and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William & Mary (1987).  He then worked at East Carolina University on nutrient cycling in the Neuse River Estuary, in Prince Edward Island, Canada on closed-system biofilter design for finfish aquaculture, and at the Institute of Ecosystems Studies on dissolved organic carbon cycling in groundwater.

Dr. Boyer currently has $1.1 million in external funding and has generated over $17 million in research funding during his tenure at FIU.  He has 45 peer reviewed research publications and 40 technical reports in fields ranging from microbial ecology, biogeochemistry, water quality, and bacterial metagenomics.  Of these, over 70% are related to the greater Everglades ecosystem.

His current research addresses both natural and human-induced physical/chemical effects on microbial communities and water quality of estuaries and coasts.  He is a founding principal investigator of the NSF-funded Florida Coastal Everglades LTER and directs the Water Quality Monitoring Network for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.  His most recent NOAA grant focuses on developing goals for the research and management of coastal South Florida.

Dr. Boyer serves on 12 national and regional scientific advisory boards and has been involved in numerous proposal reviews and selection boards, including 5 national program reviews and multiple assessments of federal science programs.  He has served on 17 graduate student committees and has supported 5 postdoctoral associates at FIU.

Dr. Rudolf Jaffé Receives George Barley Professorship in Everglades Research

Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Kenneth G. Furton, has announced the appointment of Dr. Rudolf Jaffé as the first recipient of the George Barley Professorship in Everglades Research.  The appointment is financially supported by interest income from the SERC endowment built on a variety of sources, including state matching funds.

Dr. Jaffé has made significant contributions to the University’s research enterprise both through service and research, and has demonstrated a high and sustained academic productivity regarding Everglades research. He served as Director of the Southeast Environmental Research Center (SERC), whose research mission is focused on the greater Everglades ecosystem, from 2002 until 2009. Prior to that Dr. Jaffé was Associate Director of SERC from 1997 to 2002. He received the FIU Research Award in 2006 and is a tenured Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry holding a joint appointment in SERC.

Dr. Jaffé, a Ph.D. graduate in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry from Indiana University with post doctoral experience in Organic Geochemistry from the Universite Louis Pasteur, France, has published over 100 peer reviewed research articles in fields ranging from organic geochemistry, biogeochemistry, marine chemistry and environmental/analytical chemistry.  Of these, over 40% are related to the greater Everglades ecosystem. Dr. Jaffé’s research is nationally and internationally recognized in the area of organic geochemistry of wetlands, estuaries and aquatic ecosystems in general.

Since his arrival at FIU in 1992, Dr. Jaffé has mentored 24 graduate students, many undergraduates and several post-docs. His research funding as PI and co-PI exceeds $14 million and includes the NSF-funded Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research program where he has been a Co-PI since its inception. Additionally, as SERC Director Dr. Jaffé was the managing PI on another $7 million of SERC-related programs and initiatives. SERC scientists have, since 1993, delivered nearly $80 million in research funding to FIU. Thus, Dr. Jaffé presided over one of the most productive research centers at FIU, overseeing and coordinating the work of 28 faculty members and research scientists along with numerous graduate students and staff.

The SERC endowment supporting Dr. Jaffé’s appointment is partially named after George Barley who tragically lost his life in a plane crash in the western Everglades.  Mr. Barley was a newspaperman and ardent environmentalist.  The Barley family was and remains involved in the Everglades Foundation which supports the work of SERC through ongoing gifts and grants.  A contribution from the Everglades Foundation provided the initial funding for this endowment.

Alumnus Dennis Lehane in the Miami Herald

An interview with MFA alumnus Dennis Lehane in today's Miami Herald is headlined "FIU: Fertile Ground for Literary Stylists" (Issues and Ideas, page 3).   Dennis, an extraordinary writer, several of whose novels have also been made into films, gives high praise to the program and to the faculty mentors he mentions by name.  We are in fact one of the top creative writing programs in the country!  Please click here for the Miami Herald article.

Elizabeth Greb Receives Presidential Salute!

Elizabeth Greb recently received the Presidential Salute Award for going the extra mile in providing quality service to the FIU community.  Elizabeth’s co-workers indicated that she always takes on extra projects and tasks outside of her regular duties.  She has excelled in the face of huge deadlines and last minute requests, making FIU a better place for students, researchers, faculty and staff.  Her commitment to the College of Arts and Sciences is commendable. Congratulations Liz!

Congratulations to our FIU Knowledge Awardees!

Congratulations to Stephanie Miller, Lina Perdomo, and Celina Ravelo in Criminal Justice/Public Administration for winning the FIU Knowledge Award. Congratulations to all of them for their high standards of service to the College of Arts and Sciences and the University.
