Welcome from the Dean
As the sixth permanent dean in the history of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), I am honored to be given the opportunity to lead the academic unit that is the heart of the University. The founding college at FIU, CAS is the largest of the University’s fourteen schools and colleges and the one most central to the mission of the University. The College of Arts and Sciences prepares students for future success, not only in our programs and majors, but also in other professional schools such as business, education, and engineering. Our students are also poised to engage in graduate studies in their disciplines, to enroll in a professional school (e.g., medicine, law), or to embark on their careers. The faculty in Arts and Sciences provide students with the foundation for lifetime success by training them to be lifelong learners who are critical thinkers able to evaluate problems and to develop creative real-world solutions.
CAS offers the most diverse educational experience at FIU, awarding 64 academic degrees in 29 academic departments and interdisciplinary programs and enrolling more than 23,000 students. The College has more than 8,000 majors and graduates nearly 2,000 students each year at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. In its core curriculum courses as well as those required for the majors, the College faculty take great pride in providing learning opportunities for students, particularly those aimed at improving critical thinking, computational, and writing skills. In addition to studying the traditional disciplines, both undergraduate and graduate students have many opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary programs.
